As a young Christian I struggled to understand and enjoy reading my Bible. One day I got the idea to read my Bible with a dictionary and remembered that Donnie had once told me that Webster was a Christian. So, I thought; “What better dictionary to use alongside my Bible than one written by a Christian!” The Scriptures came alive to me as I found a deeper understanding by defining the words within a Scripture. As a speaker I have never created a message without my Webster’s dictionary right by my side. I am a HUGE fan of word studies and often teach and/or refer to them when I am speaking.
Last year during one of my conferences, Donnie and I went to a bookstore to purchase a dictionary for some young girls who were attending the conference and wanted to start doing word studies as they read their Bible (click here for the full story on the "Youngens"). As we searched the dictionaries, we were shocked to discover that God had been removed from the Webster’s Dictionary! My old version of this dictionary referenced God in many of the definitions, so we began to search for an even older version of this dictionary to see if we could find even more references. This led to a discovery of “Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary” which has replaced my 1980 version and become an invaluable resource in my daily Bible study.
“Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary contains the greatest number of Biblical definitions given in any reference volume.” Not only are there far more references to God, but it is filled with Scripture! This is an amazing software program that takes you from the dictionary to the Bible and back with just a click of your mouse! Wherever there is a Scripture reference in the dictionary, just click on it and you are taken to the Bible! When in the Bible you can click on ANY word from Genesis to Revelation and it will take you to that word in the Dictionary!
